The
Conservation of Clean H2O
There are many resources present on Earth which humans use in order
to live. However there is one that stands out amongst all and that is water.
Water makes life possible and makes this planet significant. From the most
basic organisms to blue whales all consume water. It is extremely vital for
humans as well. Man can carry on 1 month without food but only very few days
without water. Unfortunately, today the world is experiencing a decrease in the
quantity of clean water. It is important for people to value clean water. The
conservation of water is essential because it has an impact on the health of
humans, runs the ecosystem and indirectly affects the economy.
The biological conditions that humans endure are all based on water
supply and water content. What makes water so important to the body? The
metabolic reactions in the cells take place in presence of water. Also, in
order for energy to be released there must be oxygen supplied to the cells.
Oxygen is transported by blood, which is 90% water. Human brains are mainly
water and issue blood. In there was less water, then blood would get thick thus
making the transportation of oxygen to the blood cells very inefficient. The
human body is(on average) 45 quarts of water which makes up well over half of the
total body weight. These are just few of many examples why water consumption is
inevitable. Even so, a lot of people today lack clean drinking water and the
statistics are quite displeasing. More than 1 billion humans lack access to
clean drinking water (World Water Day 2007, What's Good For Fish Is Good For
People). Water, being the fuel for life should be made available to everyone
however, to the dismay of many this is not the case. Every eight seconds, a
young child dies from lack of water or a waterborne disease. (World Water Day
2007, What's Good For Fish Is Good For People). It is hard for one to imagine
that these events are happening in reality yet live with desire for more.
Not only is water the fuel for human life, it is equally
significant for the ecosystem. "One fisherman looked at me and held his
hands a couple feet apart. Then he moved his hands about four inches closer
together and pointed to the Yangtze, shaking his head. His message was clear:
Because fish are becoming smaller and less abundant, it is becoming
increasingly difficult for these people to feed their families. Fish provide
the primary source of protein for tens of millions of Chinese along the
Yangtze, but dams, water diversions and pollution are taking their toll on the
river's fisheries."( World Water Day 2007, What's Good For Fish Is Good
For People). Over here, the fishermen realizes the destiny of the fish and the
impact that it can have on his people. This is just a mere chain reaction .
When one member of the ecosystem is affected, all are. It is important that we
maintain the ecosystems for it brings people many resources such as various
produce and meats. If society fails to preserve these , mankind will seize to
exist.
Last but not least water affects the economy of many countries.
Thousands people die everyday from water related diseases. "Without a new
approach to solving this crisis, the death toll could reach as high as 107
million people by 2020, says a new book by the Pacific Institute." (Over
100 million could perish from water-related illness by 2020). Today, most
products are being made in countries where cheap labor is available ( China,
India, Taiwan). If the working class citizens of these countries somehow get
infected by a water related disease, the economical output of would decrease
significantly. As a result, less people would have access to the products which
circulate the markets. There are other resources that would be cut-off.
"Two billion - almost one in every three people on the planet - do not have
adequate sanitation facilities or electricity." (World Water Day 2007,
What's Good For Fish Is Good For People).
To conclude, water shouldn't be taken
for granted due to the necessities it provides us with. This resource must be
allocated efficiently. For those who have access to should consider themselves
blessed. If it were not for this precious liquid then Earth would be just
another planet.
